There shall be "a day of public Thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God...."
--1789 Congressional Proclamation

A holiday for celebrating faith, family, and freedom, Thanksgiving Day is both distinctly Christian and exclusively American. Barbara Rainey has created an excellent resource for enabling you and your family to remember the past, recognize God's hand in our history, and express thankfulness to Him for His goodness today.

This story of the Pilgrims' faithfulness and biblical thankfulness is accompanied by a CD of songs of worship and praise that will call your hearts to gratitude. It's a wonderful opportunity to enrich your family's awareness of our nation's Christian heritage, provide models of courage and sacrifice for your children, and establish a tradition of sharing your gratefulness with one another, which will build a legacy of memories for the future.

 "Great book!" 2009-12-06
By John O'Keefe (Springfield, MO)
It was absolutely wonderful to receive this book in time for Thanksgiving. This was our first year hosting for the family and it was wonderful to start a new tradition in our house of reading this book.

The story was excellent and well written and really gave me a good understanding of what things were really like back then!

I would encourage you to buy it and start a new tradition and heritage with your family!

 "Celebration of Thanksgiving" 2009-12-05
By Nelda C. Gillilan (Rockwall, TX USA)
Our family added this book as part of our Thanksgiving tradition. In the back of the book there are several pages on which to write. We wrote the date at the top of one page, and each person wrote a short journal of what he/she was thankful for this year. It will be special to read what was written in years to come, particularly the children's entries.

I found this book to be delightful. Our bible study group read it aloud the week before Thanksgiving, and all of us were touched by the sacrifices that were made by the Pilgrims and their tenacity, thankfulness, and obedience to God. I bought many of these books and gave them as gifts. I know I will read this book every year at Thanksgiving.

I made this mix for Thanksgiving and it was a real hit. Had the pumpkin on hand as I had been planning to make a pie but this was better!!!  "add pumpkin?" 2008-03-13
By Margaret Thomas (Georgia)
I started to make this last night, I ordered it awhile back, and I read the instructions. Add pumpkin? This is a mix. I bought a mix so I could make pumpkin bread without having to have pumpkin. If I'm going to add pumpkin I may as well use plain flour and make it from scratch. Waste of money for me. If you're the kind of person who hires a maid and then cleans up yourself, or if you buy a dog and then do your own barking, you might like it. I'd rather have a mix that's ready to go with the usual mix-liike ingredients of egg, oil and water.

"A BOOK FOR MY TWO FAVORITE HOLIDAYS" 2005-02-21
By Tim Janson (Michigan)
Boy, right when Halloween is over I am in full Thanksgiving mode. I've been doing Thanksgiving dinner for my family for over ten years and each ear I seek out at least one or two new recipes to try out on my guinea pigs....errr...guests. This book is culled from the most wonderful recipe site on the internet, allrecipes.com. Long has this been a favored site of mine and millions of other cooks as well. The editors have pulled together 200 of the finest holiday recipes for inclusion in the book.

Among the most valuable sections is the one on preparing for the big feast. it covers what can be done a month before such as getting the invitations out, ordering the turkey or ham, etc. Then we move to two weeks before and prepare by getting making sure you have all the necessary utensils, roasters, and pots, and figuring out where to sit people and your needed space. All this leads up to the big day as you cook the bird and prepare everything else.

From there we move to the recipes and everything from a traditional roasted turkey, to prime rib, deep fried turkey, Alaskan baked Salmon, and honey glazed turkey. I admit I stick to the traditional turkey but I love the vast amount of wonderful side dish recipes. This past Thanksgiving I gave the cheesy green beans a whirl and they were a big hit. Rolls, stuffings, veggies, appetizers..they're all here and well represented. Ahh...and don't forget the deserts! Chocolate Chip Pumpkin bread! Wow...that was some good stuff!

The index is well presented and the recipes canebe found under several listings. For example the Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread will be found under Chocolate, Pumpkin and Breads, making for easy finding. This is one I just love to pull out when November rolls around. A fantastic book!

 "Horrible Product" 2010-01-06
By David C. Stevens
I ordered this as a Christmas gift for my wife, who this product seemed ideally suited for. (i.e. She makes two long grocery lists each week for some complicated and delectable dinners.) The features seemed ideal and, with a price this high it seemed more than a toy. Well, it was LESS than a toy. Voice recognition might as well not be listed as a feature. The display screen went blank the second time we used it and a call to Smartshopper's technical support (sounded like someone working in their basement) could offer no advice. I printed two short lists and the type was barely legible on the left-hand side of the print out. There is no way to enter a grocery list with a keyboard (well, one which made sense anyway). This device is a piece of junk and I recommended that Amazon drop it (and Smartshopper) from any product offering in the future. DO NOT BUY THIS!

This works very well for us, but like some users, the voice recognition is not as good as we would like. The thing you have to remember is that you cannot just say "tomatoes." You have to say "canned tomatoes" or "fresh tomatoes." It has been really helpful to us so far.

By A. Wentzel (South Dakota)
I bought this for my wife as a Christmas gift. We were both excited. After 3 minutes out of the box it stopped working. The display went blank and that was it. Removing and replacing the batteries and performing a unit reset for a "lock up" according to documentation would not fix the problem. Disappointing gift.

 "Huge disappointment" 2010-01-03

Saw the other reviews, so got this for my wife. My wife loves her lists, so the concept of the whole family putting in items and then printing out categorized was tempting.

Unfortunately, it's like the product I got is completely different than what the others are using. Very few items are recognized, even after re-recording the item. I've had 3 people try to put in something as simple as olive oil and it's not found in the library. You can manually enter items from the library but there is no simple/fast way to do this. You can go alphabetically and scan through the enter library item by item (certainly they can figure out a much more efficient way to scan through the library) or by category (but still horribly inefficient).

Definitely not worth a hundred dollars - save your money and just put out a pad and paper.

I found that I have had to reenter most of the products I use with the names I call them and in my voice before the voice recognition would pick them up correctly. This has taken a lot of time, but it is paying off now as I now only have to say the name of the item once or twice to get it to go in.

 "practice makes perfect.." 2009-12-20
By J. Clark (california)
i got this as a gift and the theory was great...whenever someone noticed we were out of something, they had to put it on the list. That way, I was no longer "responsible" for not getting cereal, milk etc.

i will admit, it was a bit difficult to get the correct items on the first try-once we realized that background noise and shouting into the shopper didn't work, we eventually got the correct items to come up.

I have also utilzed the "improve item recognition" quite a few times and it really does help.

the frustrating thing for me is that i am now to a point where I have added so many things, my "library is full" and although I have deleted items i do no buy, I still cannot add more items.

In any case, its a good product and gets a lot of use at this household!

And not just any roller coaster! One that is full of well developed characters and a plot full of drama that is believable. The issue of mental illness is not touched on a whole lot, especially by Black American authors, which makes this book a unique read. Ondie is a young Black American woman dealing with mental illness and she has to work extra hard to maintain a sense of normalcy in her life in dealing with work, relationships and parenthood. When tragey strikes, it affects her as well as the rest of those around her. Will she and her family be able to cope? Will Ondie mentally spiral out of control?  "Tragedy Strikes" 2009-11-01
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net)
DARKNESS IN THE MIRROR by Erica Lewis tells a story of the tragedy of mental illness permeating a family and causing grief to all. First, the Mom had to take care of her mother who was mentally ill. Then the mother's first child, Ondie, when she became a teenager, began to exhibit the same qualities of schizophrenia as her grandmother and the family never knows just what will set Ondie off. She falls in love with Dexter and they have a child, but her condition pushes Dexter away and they never marry. Ondie adores her child and will do anything for her. What she doesn't know is Dexter has fallen for her younger sister, Serita. Dexter and Serita have been seeing each other for a year. Ondie has found a wonderful man in Paul but she still feels a connection to Dexter. Will she let him go and find happiness with Paul?

One day, when Dexter was supposed to pick up his daughter he had to work late and he asked Serita to pick her up. Tragedy strikes. Will the family be able to overcome it? Serita also makes a discovery that will cause she and Dexter to make major decisions. What should they do? How will Ondie behave?

Erica Lewis wove a tragic story of mental illness and how it can affect not only family members, but those close to the family. It is an eye-opener for those of us who have mentally ill family members. It gives the feeling that you are not alone, others have the same problems. It was well written, the characters were definitely understandable and the tension and suspense pushed the story along. It was a good book.

What you don't know won't hurt you. But what happens when you find out? Ondie Reid's life hasn't been typical. Having developed schizophrenia courtesy of genetics, Ondie has managed to have a somewhat normal life with the aid of medication and therapy. She even had a meaningful relationship that resulted in a daughter, Maya, and a marriage proposal until...her mother told her fiancé of her disease. Ondie and her former fiancé, Dexter, have maintained a friendly relationship. In fact, Ondie thinks now is the time for them to reignite what they once had. But what Ondie doesn't know is that Dexter has been secretly seeing her sister. Will the discovery of their relationship send Ondie over the edge?

"Darkness in the Mirror" is an emotionally stirring look at the human side of mental health, focusing on the struggles and hopes of one family affected by schizophrenia. It was a pleasure to read. I'm happy to see an author tackle a subject not often addressed.

 "light romance" 2009-05-23
By Gialdini (New York, NY)
I liked the hero and heroine of The Cajun Cowboy. Charmaine LeDeux is a bit of a bimbo, but don't tell her that. It makes her very angry, and she's never forgiven her (first) ex-husband for calling her one. She has a great personality though, and at the start of the book declares that she is going to change her life around. Things haven't been going so well, what with a bad loan having gone sour. Now she owes money to some scary people. And she hasn't been on a date in six months. So, as a step towards reform, she's going to become a "born-again virgin."

Her (first) ex-husband, Raoul Lanier, tests her resolve as soon as he makes his appearance. He's found out that they were never actually divorced, and he's hunted her down because, for another surprise, it turns out his father named her in his will and has given her half of his ranch. Raoul gets the other half. Neither of them are pleased about the arrangement, but old flames rekindle nonetheless.

Raine and Charmaine have good chemistry. And Raine is a very sexy cowboy. The book has some cute, funny moments - the character's interior monologues, the imaginary conversations with St. Jude. All the secondary characters, who are also supposed to be funny, I could do without though. I skimmed the whole Thanksgiving feast part - all the characters from previous and future books were a distraction. The bare bones of plot itself are pretty threadbare - the hit men after Charmaine or whatever, the oil company that's after the ranch, and her evil father, some misunderstandings between a couple that is obvious mad for each other so that we can have some conflict to keep them apart a while longer. A light, fluffy, quick read that didn't test my patience too much.

"Sexy contemporary romance that takes places in the Bayou!" 2009-03-27
By Susie (Alabama, USA)
The Cajun Cowboy is a really cute, funny, and sexy contemporary romance by Sandra Hill that takes place in the Bayou. The story involves Raoul who has just been realized from prison (he was framed) and his ex-wife, make that his current wife, Charmaine (goofy name). Raoul has gone to find Charmaine to tell her that they are still married. When he finds her, she tells him that she owes money to some loan sharks who will hurt her if she doesn't give them their money. Charmaine is a flamboyent ex-Miss Louisania beauty queen turned beauty salon owner who has been married three other times to men that look just like Raoul. Except her first marriage never ended according to Raoul. Raoul also proceeds to tell her that his father left half of his ranch to her in his will. Charmaine's brother thinks that she should go to this ranch while he takes care of her problems with the loan sharks. So she goes to the ranch to stay safe from the loan sharks threatening to take out her knee caps. Raoul doesn't mind because he doesn't want to see her get hurt, plus he still has feelings for her, deep feelings. Charmaine, in turn, still has feelings for her husband, but she wants a forever commitment that Raoul may not be able to give her at this time in his life. The chemistry between Raoul and Charmaine is especially hot and steamy. I do wish that the book had been somewhat shorter because the story focused on their relationship and didn't have as much to do with what was going on in their lives like the loan sharks after Charmaine, Raoul being framed, etc. The plot, outside of their developing re-relationship, was weak. Raoul was my favorite thing about the story with his big heart and Cajun accent. Charmaine seemed a little trashy to me at first with her four ex-husbands, skimpy-clothes wearing, big hair self, but she grew on me as the story went on because she was trying to make a better life for herself. There were some very humorous scenes, it just was a little too long. 5 stars!

"Never leave the filing of your divorce papers to chance....." 2008-09-24
By Holly R (Las Vegas, NV)
The Cajun Cowboy starts with Charmaine and Tante Lulu commiserating over some oyster shooters. (which sounds disgusting btw) It seems Charmaine has to come up with a lot of money or else the local Dixie mafia is going to shoot her in the kneecaps. As if that wasn't enough, her first ex husband (she has had four of them all together) comes waltzing back into her life and tells her that technically she has never had any ex husbands because they are still legally married! Whoops. Raoul has spent the last two years in prison after being set up and all he wants to do is get his life back. While going over his father's paperwork, he realizes that this ex wife isn't really his ex wife and that his father left her half of his ranch. Raoul offers to give Charmaine a divorce if she'll sell her half back to him. Unfortunately for him, a cattle ranch deep in the Louisiana countryside is the perfect hiding spot for Charmaine and so not only does she refuse his "generous" offer, she moves in! Since this is a Sandra Hill book, there are a bunch of irrepressible characters tucked away on the ranch. There's the ex con/music instructor who has a fine butt, the hang dog old foreman who needs a teeth whitening appointment, as well as the snot nosed punk, whose not really a snot nosed punk but a misunderstood kid. Add in Charmaine's aunt, Tante Lulu and the rest of her crazy clan and you've got a heck of a family holiday party. Charmaine and Raoul have always loved each other and Raoul would love to make the moves on her again but there's the tiny matter of Charmaine being a born again virgin and her determination that the next relationship she jumps into will be for keeps. When the barn starts exploding and the bullets start flying, Raoul might just be willing to play for keeps but will he be able to do that and keep Charmaine safe?

Ahh, another charming tale from Sandra Hill. Charmaine was delightful especially when she was decked out in her in-your-face bimbo attire. How many sexually suggestive logo's can Sandra Hill make up? Raoul (I can't stop saying his name without a ridiculously overblown accent) is also charming and his sometimes gruff manner was a perfect foil for Charmaine's breezy personality. Tante Lulu once again steps in with the aid of St. Jude and the ranch hands also lend their unwanted expertise.

There is an interesting plot that includes Raoul's father and his mysterious death, dastardly oil companies and Charmaine's loan shark. It helps to move the story along and keep the ball rolling, especially since there isn't a whole lot of sex going on. Charmaine and her born again hymen keep cutting Raoul off on the knees plus she's demanding forever this time. Raoul feels he's got too much going on right now to concentrate on his wife but when the divorce papers come in, neither one will sign them, nor will either one make a move. It takes a family filled Thanksgiving to get these two made-for-each-other lovers to finally take the leap.....again.

Although I really liked The Cajun Cowboy and I liked Charmaine, I wished she would have eased up on the gigantic chip on her shoulder. The girl walks, talks and acts like a bimbo but if anyone even dares say that she tends to react badly. Raoul manages to get past her prickly defenses though and sweeps this former Miss Louisiana off her feet. This was a good fun read and I can't wait to read more of Sandra Hill's Cajun series. Enjoy!!

"Stick to what you know..." 2008-06-25
By A. W. Colvin (Louisiana USA)
I got a few good laughs from this book, but it generally seemed forced to me. You can certainly tell Ms. Hill is not from Louisiana. She should simply put a Cajun dictionary at the end of her "Cajun" books, instead of stopping at EVERY phrase to explain what something is.

And the heroine in this book...oh, please, chere. If she was ever Miss Louisiana, she wouldn't be caught dead in Peggy Bundy stretch pants! I understand the whole bimbo concept, but put her in something sexy...not something one of my old aunt's would wear to the casino.

"Spicy romance can't even save this one" 2007-11-05
By Tracy Vest (Northern California)
Former beauty queen and four-time divorcee Charmaine LeDeux learns her first divorce was never actually filed, thus she's still married to her first and possibly true love. Her ex, Rusty Lanier, a disgraced vet fresh from a stint in prison after being framed lets her know that they have both inherited his estranged father's ranch. On the lam from the Dixie mafia due to her high interest "loan" from Bucks R Us, she hides out on the ranch, hoping to hold on to her sanity and her born again virgin status. But the always sparkling chemistry between the two simply won't let their lust for each other die down.

If you can get past the horrific Cajun dialect of the annoying and meddlesome Tante Lulu, you might actually like this story. Poorly written, filled with trite dialogue and a ridiculously thin plot, about the only thing it has going for it is the spicy romance. But even that is not enough to drag this one out of the cellar. Recommended only for true fans who want the whole Cajun series.
